Brief overview of Uzbekistan’s chemical market:
The chemical industry is one of the priority sectors of Uzbekistan’s economy. Uzbekistan has all the necessary conditions for the development of the chemical industry. There are large deposits of raw materials: natural gas, gas condensate, phosphate, sulphur, sylvite, sodium chloride and limestone – all of which are used widely in the chemical industry. The chemical industry employs more than 40,000 skilled workers. Chemists are educated in universities in Uzbekistan and abroad.
The main industry body is Uzkimyosanoat, which aims to implement a general concept for the development of the chemical industry. By the volume and type of mineral nitrogen and phosphate fertilisers it produces, Uzkimyosanoat occupies a leading position in the region, being the largest producer of ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and ammophos nitrofosa in Central Asia. Uzkimyosanoat businesses supply their products to leading sectors of the economy: agriculture (fertilisers, chemical pesticides, defoliants and film for cotton plants); the gold mining industry (sodium cyanide and polyacrylamide); light industry (acetate filaments and Nitron fibre); the building materials industry (soda ash); and others.
The main strategic areas of development in the chemical industry are:
- Reconstruction and modernisation of existing mineral fertiliser plants
- Construction of new facilities; and creation of joint ventures with foreign partners
- Increased production of export-oriented products
- Production of import-substituting products
In accordance with a programme of modernisation of the chemical industry for 2007-2011, approved by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, projects are being implemented at the company’s businesses to modernise and reconstruct the main plants. The programme provides for the implementation of 30 projects at seven of the company’s businesses.
A programme of measures to implement major modernisation projects for 2009-2014 is also being realised. It includes 28 projects, as well as the creation of new facilities:
- A facility to produce ammonia and urea in the Navoi Region
- A facility to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and caustic soda in the Navoi Region
- Production of dimethyl ether (DME) at JSC Ferganaazot
- Production of synthetic detergents
Uzkimyosanoat businesses are currently developing production of 11 new types of chemical products: phosphatized ammonium nitrate, carbamide-ammonia mixture, methanol (grade A), dimethyl ether, low-density ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, trisodium phosphate, feed phosphates, carboxymethylcellulose, synthetic detergents, and catalysts for producing ammonia.
